Will POF be a good alternative to PLC?

We are looking if POF will be a good alternative to PLC products, e.g. in case of using by Telecom Operators. Could you please give us a comparison between POF and PLC?

The comparison with

The comparison with powerline is as following:

  • Stability

POF has stable and reliable 100Mbps today up to 50m.
PLC: 400Mbs is gross data rate. Most of the transmission bandwidth is used to reduce the impact of interferences and to keep the link connected /eg. error correction), in reality the raw data rate available for data transmission is around 80Mbps max. This bandwidth is not stable and can be disturbed e.g. by other PLC products to be reduced to 2Mbps. The bandwidth decreases also with the distance. With PLC you never know what happens tomorrow. Many IP-TV service provider do not use PLC anymore.

  • Power Consumption

POF mediaconverter consumes around o,8 to 1 Watt.
PLC mediaconverter consume between 3 and 6 Watt. The higher the bandwidth the more consumption

POF is no shared medium: this means that each branch linked to a switch guarantee 100Mbs.
PLC is shared medium and the available bandwidth (e.g. 80Mbps raw data rate) is shared between all the devices connected to the home network. This, in combination with unstable data throughput is very critical.
(What is said for PLC is also valid for wireless and, with lower interferences for PLC over coaxial cable).

  • General comment

POF needs to be installed, this may seem to be an obstacle, but it offers the service provider higher safety in the home for future services.
There are new IP-TV products coming to the market with Set Top Boxes having als media clients integrated (to access the PC with the IP-TV STB), in this case the customer may like to see a HDTV film stored on the PC or NAS and in this case the bandwidth e.g. of a PLC product is to small and problems will arise.

POF can be installed inside the wall with electrical wires and outside the wall, very easy to terminate etc... so it is small investment of time but high long term benefit in the home.
